Does an air fryer really use less oil?

An air fryer is a small convection oven: a fan drives hot air past the food fast enough to brown and crisp it, so you need a brushing of oil rather than a panful. What it does not do is reproduce deep-fried texture exactly — chips come out closer to oven-roasted than to fried, and batter-coated food does not work well at all because there is no hot oil to set the batter.
